African American Traditions from the Garden

Please join us for a fun, educational, and enlightening class celebrating Black History Month. We will share cultural traditions and the rich history of common fruits and vegetables that have been historically planted in African American gardens. We'll look at past and current farmland and many historic cuisines often served within the African American culture. As a special treat, we ask that you bring one of your favorite written recipes. We will have a special sampling.
Presenters:
Kim Perry was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, where she received her bachelor's degree from Metropolitan State University in the field of Social Work. She also received her Master's degree in Agriculture Science from Texas A&M and currently serves as the Director of Education with Urban Harvest where she oversees the Community Garden Program, school classes, and program as well as the educational classes. Prior to that, Kim was the Harris County Extension Agent for Prairie View University where she facilitated education workshops and classes for farmers and urban gardeners. For the past six years, Kim has been one of the Harris County Master Gardeners and was awarded the Outstanding Service Award in 2020. She's been featured on several news channels, in many blogs, newsletters, and educational speaking engagements. During her downtime, she loves to garden, paint, and make soap.
Janice Brown has over 20 years of gardening experience on the Gulf Coast. She is the owner of On the Grow Garden coaching service which has been serving the Houston metro area for 10 years. Shes's a Master Garden and Master Naturalist who uses her extensive knowledge to coach new gardeners to garden success. As a consultant, she is the residential garden expert for the Texas Home and Garden Show and has consulted for a multitude of garden projects in the city of Houston. http://www.girlonthegrow.com
